Antarctica, Art and Environmental Projects

Antarctica, Art and Environmental Projects

Xavier Cortada
Wednesday, April 25th , 2007 – 7:30 PM
Location: Abanico Theater – Arts & Minds Center
3138 Commodore Plaza, Miami, FL
On the 50th anniversary of the opening of the South Pole Station, Miami artist Xavier Cortada arrived in Antarctica to create art. He used the 3 km thick glacial ice sheet that covers the South Pole as an instrument to mark time. Flags marked the location of the pole each year since 1956 and a symbolic ice “mangrove seedling” was planted at the location of the current pole. Through the movement of the ice sheet, it will reach the coastline of Antarctica in 150,000 years.By this juxtaposition of human and geological time, the artist invites us to reflect on our role on this planet and reaffirms the notion that we are merely custodians who should live in harmony with nature during the brief time we are here. Understanding the Chakras

Understanding the Chakras

Deborah Baker
Tuesday, April 17th , 2007 – 7:30 PM
Location: Abanico Theater – Arts & Minds Center
3138 Commodore Plaza, Miami, FL
There are seven major chakras, or energy centers, in the body located from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is a spinning vortex of energy (prana) that is created by your consciousness. Chakras act like wheels in the body taking in energy from the outside, organizing, processing and sending it back out again. No chakra stands alone – they all work in unison. As you cope with life, you choose to either increase (open) or decrease (close) the energy in your chakras.
