Location: 2985 S Bayshore Drive, Miami, FL

What made the music of The Beatles so universally popular and what made them such a dominant factor in the revolutionary decade of the 1960s? Composer/songwriter Dr. Armando Tranquilino will discuss these and other questions in a presentation on this magical period in the history of music. Through selected Beatles songs, he will discuss a composer’s view of the melody, lyrics, harmony, rhythm, tone-color, and structure of Beatles’s music. Professor Tranquilino is the former director of the Electro-Acoustic Music Studio of the University of Arizona and is currently a professor at FIU, where he, among other things, teaches the history of rock music.

Winner of an Oscar and nominated for five others, including competing nominations for its wonderful co-stars Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, this is a classic tale of two blue-collar women who have finally had their fill of being mistreated by men and by their lives, and take to the road (hunted by cops in six states after they kill a man who attempts a rape). Their wild adventure turns into a journey of self-discovery. As they recognize in themselves unexpected resources and capabilities, they eventually undergo a rite of passage that is exalting to them and to us. “As actors (the co-stars) work together like a high-wire team, without putting a foot wrong” (Ebert). Join us for this outstanding film that begins a new series in a new venue.
