Health care ethics – particularly quality of life issues, the right to life, and the right to die – effect everyone, young and old, whether healthy or disabled. About 22 percent of the population in Florida is already over 60 and an additional 20-some percent will care for patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease – at a rate of about 1 per minute! In this dynamic lecture, which brings to light the ethics and philosophy behind the famous court cases that grapple with the concept of human rights as technologies surpass our understanding of their impact on society, you will learn about current Florida statutes on advance directives and other end of life issues.

As Green Architecture becomes more prevalent, architects take more of the natural environment into account in the design process. Observe the motion of a compass and it becomes obvious that we are live in the Earth’s electromagnetic field. What impact does this have on the structures we live and work in and to what extent should we account for this in the design process? Prominent South Florida architect Robert Barnes has given this subject a good deal of thought. He shares his explorations with us and how he uses his discoveries in his own designs.

When 20-year old Vita leaves her native town of Guinea Bissau for Paris to finish her studies, she promises her mother not to sing. According to an old legend, any woman who dares to sing will be cursed fatally. In Paris, Vita falls in love with Pierre, a young musician – and sings – but now worries about the consequences of her act. Pierre marvels at her talent and encourages her to make a record. While the success is immediate, Vita grows even more concerned that her family should find out about her “fault”. This is a film about the conflict between cultural heritage and the pursuit of happiness. Whether you are a cinema aficionado or just like to se great films that the big theaters do not show, you want to se this masterpiece. It is produced in Cape Verde and France by Flora Gomes and stars Fatou N’Diaye as Vita and Jean-Christophe Dollé as Pierre. It features music by jazz musician Manu Dibongo; running time: 90 minutes.
